Crockett's Island

Crockett's Island represents both the American Dream and the cloistered world of white privilege. The fact that the Miltons can, and do, buy an entire island, is in dilative of their power and wealth. The Island is off of the coast of Maine near Vinalhaven and boasts a large white house as well as a barn and a boat house. Kitty initially protests the purchase as it is far from New York, but Ogden insists people would come to them-another indicator of their power and influence. He declares the island "part of the plan" (79). The Island serves as a tether for all of the Miltons as it holds memories of grand parties, as well as refuge from the world at large.
