The Test

The test is used in the novel as a symbol and gauge of how each character is feeling towards his possible death. The characters who are most scared of death are often the ones most reluctant to the test. There is also some doubt cast as to its reliability.

Nico’s Shoes

Nico’s shoes, which Yale begins to wear after Nico’s death, represent the presence of the dead amongst the living. The fact that Yale continues to wear Nico’s shoes serves as a reminder of how Yale continues to carry Nico’s memory with him wherever he goes.

Nico’s Orange Scarf

Nico’s orange scarf, which Charlie takes with him, takes on a different meaning. To Fiona and Yale, Charlie’s decision to wear Nico’s scarf reflects his hypocrisy and his selfishness.
