Summary

Ani runs through the forest until she is knocked off by a branch and her horse runs away. She tries calling for Falada but starts walking when her horse does not respond. She finds a stream and follows it as far as it will go, using the knowledge her aunt gave her on which plants she can eat. Ani feels guilty for ignoring the warnings of mutiny and tries to talk to an owl to reach Bayern. A few days later, she finds a small house and passes out after telling the woman that she is lost.

Ani wakes up in the woman’s house. The woman, named Gilsa, tells Ani that she does not want to know about Ani’s trouble, but comforts Ani when she begins to cry. Ani decides to accompany Gilsa’s son Finn to...
