Summary

Chapter 17 – Sarah is devastated by what she has seen as she heads back up the trail. She takes an unfamiliar path to Shadow River, where she watches it course by, fed by Lake Wakhiakum. She comes to a large, lake-like area of the river where she finds an old canoe, dock, and a fisherman’s hut, and it reminds her of the photo she found in Johnny’s office.

Chapter 18 – When Sarah returns, Johnny is in the shower, whistling. She wonders how he can act so casually, but then wonders if she herself is reading into things that are not there. He asks her to get into the shower with him, so she does. She tells him she saw him head to the Minkowski house. Johnny explains he went over to look at Kadin Junior’s arm rash. Johnny denies anything else is happening...
