Perspective

The story is written in first person from a limited point of view. What is interesting about this book is that the "I" is actually credited to two authors and there is no distinction made between the writers of any given chapters or on any given topics. This seems an acceptable method of writing and it is assumed that a large amount of the writing or even all of it is to be credited to Scott Nearing but the preface is written by Helen Nearing and the tone and language of that section closely resembles the rest of the writing. Whether the actual author is an important aspect of the book becomes a personal choice and it seems likely that most readers will simply assume one or the other of the Nearings as the main author.
