Summary

In the first section, Day 1, the narrator, Daphne, remembers her grandparents' mobile home in Altavista, Paiute County, while sitting in her office at the university. After her grandparents and mother died, Daphne received the home. Her uncle Rodney keeps it up since Daphne lives some hours south in San Francisco. On an impulse, she leaves work considerably early. She recalls her morning with her daughter Honey: rushing to get her to daycare so as not to be late. Most of the morning at the office she spent checking in on her husband Engin's green card status and pending reimbursements from the university.

Before picking up Honey, Daphne considers the expense of flying to Istanbul to be with Engin, but knows she cannot leave her job as Director of Engagement. She smokes several cigarettes. With 16-month-old Honey in the car, they begin driving...
