Summary

Chapter 8 focuses on Georgie, who has joined the Christians Active In Light (CAIL) mission to help get her out of prostitution, though she has told everyone but William and Clover Tobin, the mission’s leaders, that she was rehabilitating herself from alcoholism. Although relationships between members are criticized in CAIL, Georgie starts seeing and having sex with David, a reforming gambler. She finds this relationship much more loving and innocent than any of her past experiences.

The narrator then relates the circumstances that led Georgie to CAIL: a john beat and raped her, and William Tobin had found her in that beaten state.

William Tobin takes Georgie and a few other CAIL members to a prayer hall in the city to prepare for a meeting; Georgie takes this chance to contact Ryan for cocaine. She is once again shocked at his youth...
