Summary

This section follows the previous format of the book, which provides short chapters that alter between Pilgrim’s time in Arnau, Switzerland and her experience in Magulu, Tanzania. The chapters related to Arnau take place from March 17 to March 19. The chapters related to Magulu take place from May 5 to May 16.

Pilgrim’s position in Arnau continues to dwindle. No one in the town will talk to her and she feels as though she is being stalked. On two occasions, Pilgrim finds an empty coffee cup in her sink. She does not drink coffee, and she can feel someone else’s presence lingering in her home. She confronts her landlady, who most certainly let a stranger in, but she ignores Pilgrim’s questions.
