Summary

Part III begins with Chapter 10, “The Office Chorus” (163), set in 2008 and told from the perspectives of Jonathan's co-workers. Simone, Jonathan's receptionist, did not know the investment firm was doing anything illegal. Jonathan's inner circle—Enrico, Harvey, Oskar, and Joelle—were privy to all the details of the Ponzi scheme. They all worked on the 17th floor; Jonathan's daughter Claire worked on the 18th floor, where legitimate investment business was conducted. On the day of the office Christmas party, Jonathan and his associates learned that Claire had called the FBI to report them. Oskar and Enrico began planning an escape out of the country, but only Enrico followed through, fleeing to Mexico; Harvey began writing a confession. Joelle panicked.
