Summary

Chapter 7 shifts back to 1996. Clemantine and Claire arrived in Tanzania. Shortly thereafter, immigration police brought them "to a refugee camp in Kigoma" (110). Though some believed the camp offered safety, there were insufficient resources. People were sick and dying. Eventually, Clemantine and Claire "joined more of Rob's extended family in an overcrowded compound" (111). Rob became increasingly angry and volatile. He was now one of them, unwanted and homeless. Eventually they found a bus to a camp in Malawi. On the way, Clemantine felt ungrounded.

At the new camp, Dzaleka, Claire "did not want to settle in" (117). If they stayed, they would be permanent victims. She did everything she could to find work. She even made money as a "black-market butcher" (120). Then one day she and Rob announced they were leaving. Clemantine was angry. Claire ignored her.
