Nick Beron

Nick Beron is the novel’s protagonist and narrator. He narrates the events of the novel in the past tense as he recalls and reflects upon them retrospectively. At about the age of 30, Nick was living in New York City with his long-term girlfriend Hannah Rampe. Nick originally aspired to be a successful musician, but he eventually settled into an unfulfilling career as an assistant music editor. He was reluctant to propose marriage to Hannah, but he eventually realized that he did not want to live without her. Thus, they became engaged, and Nick relocated to upstate New York with Hannah so that Hannah could begin her new job as the caretaker of an old historic house where famous writer Edmund Wright lived in the 1800s. Wright House is rumored to be haunted.
