Intimacy is one of several shadow themes running through The Game. It is a shadow theme because the author/narrator, Style, does not recognize the importance of human intimacy. Style is aware that he and many of his pickup artist friends feel incomplete, but he fails to realize that this emptiness stems from a lack of human closeness. Much of the addictive pickup behavior in which he engages is designed to distract him from the lack of intimacy which is causing him great pain. Like many addicts, Style believes picking up more and more women will cure him of his "one-itis" for Lisa, "one-itis" being a pickup artist term for developing intimate feelings for a woman. Rather than embrace the intimacy he so needs, Style avoids Lisa and beds several other women, hoping to cure himself.....
