Summary

In “Winter Birds,” Jake picks out his clothing – all thrift store finds – in the shed Frank built him and head to school. When he returns home, Krystal is anxiously preparing for Bert’s return home. Jake and Krystal hear a knock on the door. Krystal opens it to find Rachel. Inside, Rachel is happy to see Krystal, but Krystal does not return the response. Krystal tells Rachel, “You have some nerve,” and says that Bert warned her not to talk to Rachel (60). Krystal reminds Rachel that they used to be friends. Rachel wants to shower in their house – since his bathtub has sunk through the floor – but Krystal tells her no.
