Summary

In Chapter 33, Phoebe continues to ask Shockley about the Bears and the Rabbits. Shockley reveals to Phoebe that Heist, in an effort to destabilize the Bears, has challenged Solitary Love to ritual combat, which is to be fought to the death. In Chapter 34, Phoebe decides to remain at Anita’s compound for the time being, while Phoebe thinks about how to get to Heist before his fight with Solitary Love. In Chapter 35, the next day, Spark says that she is going to a Bear settlement to watch Heist and Love’s fight. To Phoebe’s surprise, Spark agrees to show Phoebe the way there. In Chapter 36, Spark and Phoebe travel on foot towards a Bear settlement. They must travel across desert terrain in the Mojave Desert, and the weather is quite hot.
