Summary

Urania’s cousin Lucinda arrives at Agustin’s house. She is delighted to see Urania, but also resentful that Urania has not contacted them before. Urania lies about why she has returned, saying that she wanted to surprise them. When Lucinda presses her again, asking why she has not sent letters, Urania continues to lie. Through her thoughts, we learn that while she liked Lucinda, she never missed her or anybody else. The only one she kept in contact to was Sister Mary, a nun at the Santo Dominigo Academy where Urania used to study.

The nurse comes back to help Agustin defecate, and Lucinda and Urania talk about the state of Agustin and the state of the house. While her cousin talks about how the fallout of the assassination hit their family hard, Urania remembers her schooling in Adrian. Lucinda interrupts her to...
