Chapter 3 Summary

Hazel stays up late that night reading the book Augustus gave to her. She sleeps in late the next morning. Against her mother's normal procedure, her mom wakes Hazel up when it's almost 10 a.m. Her mother announces that it's Hazel's thirty-third half birthday, so they need to celebrate, in addition to Hazel having class. Hazel decides to celebrate with a trip to the mall with one of her girlfriends.

Hazel goes to class and then the bookstore to buy the first two books in the series of the book Augustus gave her. Hazel notices her mother sitting nearby, pretending that Hazel doesn't know she's there. When Kaitlyn meets her, they start to shop. Hazel leaves Kaitlyn to go to a corner of the mall to read.
