Tennessee

Much of the novel takes place in an unspecified town in the state of Tennessee. Caleb and Camille live in a house in Tennessee. Annie and Buster lived in this house as children, and they moved away after they became adults. In the novel’s main narrative, Disruptions in Annie and Buster’s lives compel them to visit their parents in Tennessee. However, Caleb and Camille soon go missing, and Annie and Buster resolve to find them.

Los Angeles

Annie lives in Los Angeles and works as a film actress. By the age of 30, she has become a fairly successful and well-known actress, and she as even been nominated for an Academy Award one year. However, towards the beginning of the novel, she temporarily leaves Los Angeles due to disruptions in her career and her personal life. By the end of the novel, she returns to Los Angeles...
