Summary

Christopher says that his father’s notes of Eldar’s history were some of the most difficult to decipher and organize. It is here that he found the earliest mentions of Gondolin. Included are a few sentences of Tolkien's notes that tell about Isfin, the daughter of the second leader of the Gnomes Finwë, who hated her suitor Eöl because of his ugliness. These two eventually produce Meglin, but their story is never fully told because Eöl would have wanted to keep Isfin’s distaste of him a secret. Christopher believes that this pair was invented before Meglin, as Tolkien had not yet envisioned Gondolin’s fall.
