Thursday Next is a detective in the SO-27. This division of the SpecOps is the LiteraTec, a group of police officers who investigate crimes dealing with literature. One of Thursday's jobs is to design security for one-of-a-kind original manuscripts. When one of these manuscripts is stolen, Thursday knows that no simple criminal is involved. A few days later, Thursday knows her assumptions were right on when a detective from the top secret SO-5 comes to see her. It seems SO-5 suspects that a man named Acheron Hades is behind the theft and only Thursday can identify him. Thursday goes along on a stake out and leads a team that intends to arrest Hades. However, the team under estimates Hades's powers and a gun battle ensues. Thursday is the sole survivor of the shootout.
