Summary

In August 2009, the quartet takes the ferry to play at a new music festival on Alcatraz, accompanied by a photographer and Henry’s family.

Kimiko realizes what she wants at the Festival of the Redwoods, but does not tell Henry until the summer of 2009: he seems tired, but she is not. She confesses to feeling trapped, though she has loved the years bringing the children along as he tours. When Henry agrees, she cries. The quartet will not believe this is his decision, but Henry knows now that the distilled musical theme of his life is Kimiko. They plan for Henry to finish the current season, then take a teaching position while Kimiko rebuilds her connections and career.
