Summary

Chapter 31 describes how Henry bought a Suburban and took his family camping in the wilderness. He intended to teach them to be strong, lessons he did not believe they were getting at home. On the last night in the wilderness, a pair of bears came to their campsite. The family scared them off by singing.

Also incorporated in this chapter is a description of Henry’s growing up years with his mother’s grandparents. Henry was four when his parents were killed. Henry credited his grandfather with his dislike of religion. He told Henry regularly that religion stole his daughter away from him. Henry’s father did see to it that his grandson was equipped with the intellectual strength he would need to make up for the weakness in his body.
