In Chapter 1, Renee wakes up at seven, just two hours after she has gone to sleep, by a knock on the door. The concierge's loge is not open until eight. Renee opens the door and informs Columbe of this fact before closing it again. An hour later, Paloma shows up at the door to request that a letter Columbe is expecting be brought promptly to their apartment.
