In Chapter 1, Renee finds a book in the package delivered to her, an expensive copy of Anna Karenina. The note with the book is from Kakuro Ozu. Renee is so shocked by this gift that she quickly writes a thank you note. When Renee realizes she should have turned the gift down to protect her concierge identity, she discovers that it is too late to take the note back.

In Chapter 2, Kakuro Ozu comes to Renee's door and asks her to dinner. Again Renee is so shocked that she agrees.
