Summary

Chapter 19 starts with the family back in Granny Dupree’s house informing Dixie of their decision to take Daddy off of life support. Dixie notes the strangeness of the adult’s behavior and feels confused over why the tragedy has made them put their previous differences and grudges behind them.

The next day AJ and Dixie are both up early for school and still simmering mad at each other after their fight the day before. Dixie wants to ride the bus instead of riding with Uncle Ray and Mama relents. At school her teacher Miss Taylor is kind to her, and her best friend Barbara Pittman gives her a handmade card. Dixie notices the other children gossiping about her behind her back, and envisions her teacher telling them not to ask her about her father. Dixie discusses how she felt sick at heart...
