Summary

Chapters 11, 12, and 13 prepare the reader for Uncle Ray’s arrival. In Chapter 11, Dixie is still worried about the fallout of lying to Ms. Upchurch. But her concern with what people know at school is overshadowed by their lack of food and money. She becomes obsessed with getting as much food as she can, which even factors into her belief of God. Dixie continues to doubt God and faith, though wonders if God will hear her mother, as she is an adult. She considers that maybe Mama should pray so that they can eat. Mama out of desperation calls the Duprees – only to receive harsh words and blame. She then asks Aunt Margie to come over and help her get the kids fed.
