Chapter 34 Summary

August finally arrives amidst mad, raging sunsets and cascading clouds. Ray watches the weather with wonder and realizes that he doesn't know anything anymore. He feels completely free because of his realization. One day during a deluge, a green and rose rainbow drops down near the cabin and lights around Ray, who thinks that it is a hoop for the lowly. He wanders around Desolation Peak, his shadow ringed by the rainbow. He realizes he will never need to worry about anything anymore, and he realizes "it was I not the void that changed" (p. 242). He sings aloud to himself. Winter starts to threaten, and Ray realizes he has been alone for fifty-five days. A few days later, the ranger in charge calls over the wireless radio, informing all the fire lookouts.....
