Summary

At the beginning of Chapter Six, “In Sonoita,” Jesús and Maradona are put up in a hotel by El Negro. There in Sonoita, Jesús moves into the home of his girlfriend, Celia Mendez. The Saturday before the Yuma 14/Wellton 26’s walk, Jesús and Maradona took a group across the desert. The Migra catches Jesús, but released him: “If the Migra had realized who they had in the holding pen, the Yuma 14 might still be alive today” (91). In hopes of getting the final number to 30, the Cercas family adds three brothers, all named Gonzalez and all in Sonoita, to the walk.

Meanwhile, Don Moi and his recruited walkers take a bus to Mexico City. From there, they catch a bus further north. The walkers from Veracruz gawk at the various sights and the new languages they hear. Finally, the...
