Book 3, Grace: Chapters 21-24 Summary

In Chapter 21, the soldiers, Walker, and Shoat abandon the scientists and Ike. When Ali realizes what has happened, she shows the others some weapons one of the soldiers gave to her in the middle of the night. Ike suggests that they continue in the direction they have been following, but one of the scientists, Wayne Gitner, insists that they return the way they came. Ike and Gitner divide up the food and weapons. Gitner takes a large group of people while Ike is left with nine, including himself and Ali. For several weeks, both groups do well, making progress. However, they quickly run out of food. While Ike's group continues on in good spirits, Gitner's group begins to have doubts as they begin to disappear one after another. Eventually Gitner is left on his own to starve...
