Point of View

The novel is in first person from the sole perspective of Greg Heffley, in the form of a diary he uses to record his experiences. Greg is a youngster (probably about to enter sixth grade) who is living in his Gramma's basement at the opening of the novel while the family's new home is being built. Later, Greg and his family set out for an adventure in a motorhome. Greg is immature and conservative, proven by his attitudes and thoughts, and these undoubtedly skew his perspective. For example, Greg is horrified when the family arrives at the Campers' Eden campground and discovers that parents are not watching their children in the pool. He has a brief flashback to his own experience learning to swim and envisions his father tossing him in the water and ordering him to swim. That is probably not what happened but...
