Greg Heffley

Greg is the main character of this novel and the narrator. He is a youngster (probably about to enter sixth grade), and his actions and thoughts seem appropriate for his age. He sees things from a child's perspective but he is very conservative. For example, when the family arrives at the Campers' Eden campground, Greg noticed that none of the adults near the pool are keeping an eye on their small kids. He says those kids have life jackets so they do not even have to learn to swim, and cites his own experience of being thrown in as a contrast. He also notices that no one is following the rules but rather than seeing it as an opportunity to have fun of his own, he is upset that no one is enforcing the rules.
