Summary

In Chapter 38, when Hal went downstairs in the night to fill her water glass she felt her foot catch something on the second step down. There was nothing to grab to keep herself from falling. When she landed, Hal thought she was lucky that she was not dead. Dizzy and shaky, Hal crawled back up the stairs. At the top, she saw what appeared to be a string tied to two rusty nails. She realized someone had strung the trap while she was sleeping, intending for her to be hurt when she fell. She did not understand the attempt on her life since she was no longer set to inherit Mrs. Westaway’s estate.
