Summary

In Chapter 14, as Hal regained consciousness, she heard someone comment that she had a fever. Able told Hal that his partner, Edward, was a doctor. When he arrived he would check Hal out. Mitzi hovered over Hal like a mother. She apologized for Harding’s outburst. Abel admitted he had not expected to get any money from his mother so he was not surprised when the will was read. Abel did ask what happened to Maud, Hal’s mother. Hal told him the truth, that she was hit by a car and killed. She saw Abel’s grief and felt briefly bad for hurting him. Mitzi asked perhaps if leaving so much to Hal in the will was Mrs. Westaway’s way of atoning for running Maud away from home. Abel said he did not think that was the case.
