Summary

In Chapter 8, Hal learned how to do cold readings by listening to her mother. She had no choice but to take up that profession when her mother was killed in a hit-and-run accident outside their apartment. Hal was just a few days shy of her 18th birthday. The person responsible for killing her mother was never found.

On the train, Hal Googled the Westaways to find information about them. One of the things that was most evident about the family was that all of its members were comfortably wealthy. She noticed in Mrs. Westaway’s obituary that there was no mention of a daughter.

Hal looked at a satellite image of Trepassen House and it made her angry. She wondered how some people had so much money and some had so little.
