Summary

In Chapter 13, Charles was worried because the members of the congregation were complaining that James was challenging them to change their traditional viewpoints, especially with the feminist group. Nan, who had been attending the meetings, was deeply hurt when the feminist group held a council on abortion. One speaker supported the legalization of abortion, another talked about her experience with a backstreet abortion. Nan, who was sickened by the experience, left the meeting early and confronted James. James apologized to Nan, but Nan knew it would not stop him from trying to pull the church into the modern world. She hated Lily, who had also been at the meeting, because she knew that Lily approved of what James was doing.
