Summary

In Chapter 4, James attended the University of Chicago and lived in the dorm. Nan, meanwhile, enjoyed the music program at Wheaton. She was making friends and decided she wanted to stay.

Most weekends the girls in the group that James and his roommate, Bill, hung around with performed in recitals. James first saw Nan when she accompanied a singer on the piano during a recital. Afterward, James approached Nan with a soft drink. They began to date steadily every Tuesday and Saturday.

James knew Nan’s background and believed that she was too good for him. He knew he needed a career. James talked to his Uncle Phillip about career possibilities.
