Summary

In Chapter 16, Jude approaches the cage, his electrical charge lighting his way. Ruby tells Jude about the “initiation” (255) fight planned for that night, and says she wants him to find her jacket while everyone is watching the fight. The chatter is in her jacket pocket. The guards arrive and take Ruby and Vida to a room where everyone is gathered. Ruby sees Olivia, who is shouting something that Ruby cannot hear. Ruby and Vida consider their options. Vida could move Knox to them so that Ruby could coerce him, but there are too many kids with guns for that plan to work.

Vida says, “What the actual fuck” (262) when she sees who they will be fighting. A boy with red (pyrokinetic) abilities is dragged into the building, held in check with ropes and chains. Ruby realizes that Olivia had been shouting the word...
