Section 1, Uncle Remus, His Songs and Stories, 1 through 11 Summary

In "Uncle Remus Initiates the Little Boy," "Miss Sally" is searching for her seven-year-old son and finds him listing to stories told to him by Uncle Remus. On this particular evening, Uncle Remus is telling a story of Brer Fox and Brer Rabbit. Brer Fox tells Brer Rabbit that he wants to "have a confab", but Brer Rabbit says that he's "full of fleas" and warns Brer Fox that he must keep his distance. Brer Fox asks if he could come to dinner and Brer Rabbit extends the invitation.

Uncle Remus next tells "The Wonderful Tar Baby Story". In this tale, Brer Fox shapes tar into a human-like form. Brer Rabbit comes along and says "howdy" to the "tar baby," who - of course - says nothing.
