Summary

In the woods, the wolf is the only animal that howls at night. Clever and wild, the only thing that satisfies the wolf is "a taste of flesh" (141). When night comes, the wolf's eyes glow, yellow and red. Anyone who sees the wolf's eyes knows they are in danger. Travelers in the woods must run from the wolf if they have not been immobilized by fear. The eyes are the only way to see the wolves, as they are "like shadows," huddling in wait of travelers to eat (141). It is foolish to walk in the woods at night, because the wolves are hunting. As soon as the traveler hears the wolves' song, they know they will die.

Now that it is winter, the wolves are ravenous. Though there are many things to fear in the forest, the hungry wolf is the most dangerous...
