Chapter 15 Summary

Cardinal Bem goes incognito to visit Father Ley in the hospital. Father Ley tells Cardinal Bem that the man who tried to kill him was Gregor Danekin, the son of the former Prime Minister. Gregor is a drunk and a religious fanatic and has been living in hiding with his sister in a religious commune for many years.

Cardinal Bem reveals to Father Ley that he was not arrested by the Security Police or any other agent of the government, but says that he must remain hidden from their surveillance in order to stop what is going to happen. Father Ley reminds him that they have friends in the Unions and arranges for Cardinal Bem to visit Peter Jop, the Union leader.
