Chapter 11 Summary

Father Prisbek and the Security Police from the school intercept Cardinal Bem at the train station and load him into a car. They are afraid he has called someone and told them where he is so they decide to take him out of the town to a new location.

A police barricade blocks the road they are using to leave town. The police are checking the identities of the people crossing out of the city. The Security Police holding Cardinal Bem become noticeably nervous and remove their signature shiny raincoats. Cardinal Bem suddenly realizes that they are not the Security Police at all, and even recognizes one of them as the priest from the church in the town. He realizes that these are the fanatical Catholics.....
