Chapter 10 Summary

Cardinal Bem discretely contacts Father Ley and finds out that the Security Police have been looking for him and have told Father Ley that he has disappeared. The Security Police deny having him in custody. This does not seem strange to either man, as the Security Police are ordinarily secretive and deceitful. Cardinal Bem arranges to meet Father Ley the next day in the city. He nervously makes his way to the train station, but it is apparent that no one is searching for him yet.

Chapter 10 Analysis

Cardinal Bem is becoming increasingly paranoid and suspicious. His conversation with Father Ley only leaves him more confused. He continues to act under the belief that his captors are the Security Police, but at this point, the reader can suspect that this is not the case, as the conversation with Father Ley serving as the...
