Chapter 9 Summary

Cardinal Bem removes his priestly collar and purple Episcopal shirtfront to hide his identity. He decides to find a phone to call his colleague, Father Jan Ley, whom he can trust. He is surprised at how invisible he is to the people without his Cardinal's attire.

The cardinal makes his way to the town church and is just about to throw himself on the mercy of the local priest when he sees the woman who tried to kill him lighting candles on the altar. He realizes that it really is the Catholics who are.....
