Summary

In Part 4, Chapter 30, the narration returns to the summer of 2017. Jack woke the morning after the night of storms in the Mulberry Room of Birchwood Manor. Elodie was asleep on the sofa. He remembered the taxi she had called for never arrived. They had talked all night. Jack told her how he as a police officer he had gone into a hostage situation and rescued seven hostages. He was considered a hero but Sarah left him because she thought he was not considerate enough of his own family by putting himself in such danger.
