Summary

In Part 1, Chapter 6, Elodie listened as her landlady, Mrs. Berry, told the story of how she and her husband met. He had been sent to live with Mrs. Berry’s family as a child during World War II. His parents were both killed in Auschwitz. Mrs. Berry remembered how resilient her husband had always been and how he accepted the unfairness of life. She felt their love had been a shelter for both of them from the unfairness of life. Elodie thought about Alastair. She had not heard from him all day and was not really even sure what his job required him to do.

Later, when Elodie tried to sleep, she wondered if she could find in Alastair the kind of love that would make her fearless. She did not think they had that sort of love at that point and...
