Chapter 16 Summary

Borlu reads Mahalia's chapters that Professor Nancy had sent to him. He doesn't find them to be of any interest so he reads Bowden's book instead. Later, while sleeping, Borlu's cell phone rings. It is Jaris, which is one of the unis from the house—the one that Borlu sounded like the anonymous caller.

Jaris thanks Borlu for not outing him to Dhatt. He goes on to tell Borlu that Mahalia told him that she found Orciny. He says that they killed her to keep her quiet—to keep anyone from finding out that they exist. He says he is in danger now too and that this is his goodbye call in honor of Mahalia's memory. Jaris hangs up. Borlu tries to call him back but the number is blocked.

Borlu calls Mrs. Geary. She denies that Mahalia was seeing anyone...
