Books have been banned from the Compound by the Prophet Childs. Kyra, however, has begun reading novels after finding the Ironton County Mobile Library on Wheels.

Cellphone

Patrick gives Kyra his cellphone when they are trying to outrun the sheriff and God Squad from the Compound in the hopes that they will come to a place where there is reception so she can call 911. This fails, but Kyra later uses the cellphone when she runs again and this time is able to get through to 911 and get help.

Spare Key

Before they drag him from the van, Patrick tells Kyra where she can find a spare key for the van. Kyra uses this spare key to make a second escape attempt from the Compound.
