Summary

In the chapter entitled Year 0, the story opens in Harlem, New York City, where the protagonist Yunior lives with his fiancée. The story is narrated by Yunior in a second-person narrative mode. Yunior is a creative-writing teacher and his fiancée is a lawyer. One day, Yunior’s fiancée looks through his e-mails and discovers that he cheated on her with approximately 50 different women over their six-year relationship. Their relationship does not end immediately, as they have been through a lot together. Yunior desperately tries to save their relationship; he even arranges trips for them to Mexico, New Zealand, and the Dominican Republic, which is where Yunior was born. Yunior attempts “every trick in the book to keep her” (176). He writes her letters, drives her to work, and cuts off contact with all of his lovers. He blames his actions on things...
