Summary

In Chapter 36, Kylie tries to sound “upbeat,” citing the number of social media notifications she had. Rachel makes an effort not to panic about Kylie's interaction online but does warn her to be careful what she says, reminding her that she cannot say anything about the kidnapping. Kylie talks about her fears, including that she would cease to exist or that the kidnappers would leave her to die. Kylie had heard enough from Heather and her husband to know that Rachel was supposed to continue The Chain, and she asks if her mother had kidnapped another child. Kylie is clearly horrified and becomes furious, and Rachel's shame increases Kylie asks if this was the only way to get her back, and Rachel confirms that it was. Kylie wants to be outside, despite the cold, and they sit on the deck together.
