Summary

Chapter 1 – Miles’s parents are intellectuals who have written on many subjects, such as codes and languages. His parents worry about Miles’s refusal to go outside and experience things besides just reading about them. They tell him it has been a year since “the day” at the lake. Miles knows participating in the candy contest is the first active thing he has done since then. Miles knows his candy must not only be delicious, but creative. He is curious about something unidentified that happened to Logan some time before, causing massive scarring on Logan’s face, but Daisy warns Miles not to ask about it.

Chapter 2 – Miles continues to wonder about Logan’s scarring, and is also very glad to be friends with Logan. Miles recounts visiting the library on his first day at Life is Sweet, where he met Mrs. Gepheart...
