Part 2, Men of Science: Chapters 1-7 Summary
In chapter one, Nora goes to the Museum's archives in order to research the building that once stood over the coal chamber where the bones were found, Shottum's Cabinet of Natural Productions and Curiosities. Nora learns more about cabinets of curiosities than she ever wanted to know, as well as a connection between J.C. Shottum and one of the Museum's own curators, Tinbury McFadden. Nora arranges to view all material belonging to McFadden and Shottum the following morning.
In chapter two, Patrick O'Shaughnessy, a sergeant with the NYPD, is assigned to be Pendergast's liaison during his investigation. O'Shaughnessy is instructed to watch Pendergast and to not be very helpful to his investigation. O'Shaughnessy believes he is being placed on this assignment because of a mistake he made five years previously.
In chapter three, O'Shaughnessy accompanies Pendergast to the Metropolitan Museum. On the way, Pendergast informs...
